You kicked off the holiday with a bang because you love celebrating the holidays. You prepped for a few weeks, made sure you looked your best by dialing in your nutrition, and you rocked it!
But then it’s over and all of a sudden you wake up feeling bloated, foggy, irritable, and uncomfortable in your own skin. Oh wait, or is that just me?!
We know I’m not the only one 😉
But I have some good news for you! You didn’t do as much damage as you think… and your celebratory treats don’t have to trigger more of a downward spiral.
Rebooting after a holiday:
Here are a couple of easy tricks that will help you recharge and reboot after a celebratory occasion.
1. Find peace in the bloat (not just the boat! 😜) – The scale might be your enemy this morning so my advice…avoid it for a few days! Celebratory weekends involve extra cocktails, salty foods, and sugar. All of these lead to your body retaining more liquid which = bloat. Just a day or two back into the swing of normalcy will lead to a loss of bloated water weight.
2. Give your digestive system a little break – Even just a few days out of a routine, a few extra cocktails, more red meat, or the snacky foods that come with holidays (cheese, chips, etc) can put a strain on your digestive system. Basically, this means your body will not break down foods as efficiently. In addition to feeling bloated, you might have stomach aches and feel gassy. Sometimes you might even break out. One of the most effective and efficient ways to recharge your digestive tract is to do a mini cleanse. Here is the link to one of my favorites, but even just cutting back on meats for more fruits, green veggies, fresh juices, or smoothies for a day or two will do wonders.
3. Drink more water – Water is the source of life, literally and figuratively. This is your easiest and most sure-fire way to detox, cleanse, energize, and fuel your body. I know you are feeling bloated, but water will flush your system. Challenge yourself to drink at least half your body weight in water each day.
4. Cut out sugar – I’m going to let you in on a little secret, sugar is basically a legalized drug. Roll your eyes all you want 😉 but when you have sugar your body instantly craves more of it. It’s a sneaky culprit that is hidden in most foods and when you have it, it triggers a dopamine release in your body. Going cold turkey on sugar elimination can lead to mood swings and exhaustion. The best approach is to crowd it out by eating natural sugars (fruits) and whole foods that are high in fiber (veggies). Doing this will help you rebalance your system and detox without as much sugar deprivation.
5. Fight the carb cravings – Holiday weekends usually means less sleep. When we are tired, our bodies seek out glucose for energy. This is why you typically crave carbs when you are tired, run down, or hungover. Carbs give us energy which gives us glucose to fuel our energy and brain. It will be hard but fight those cravings with water and whole foods that will actually satiate you – fiber and nutrient-rich foods, Have I mentioned veggies and fruits yet 😉A plant-based superfood shake will do wonders as well!
6. Try to avoid overdosing on caffeine – I’m not saying forever… I love my coffee so I wouldn’t do that to you! But after a holiday the quick fix for exhaustion can be increased coffee and caffeine. Try your hardest to refrain because the added caffeine will only further interrupt your sleep cycle and trigger additional cravings which will prolong your bloat and exhaustion. Reach for some water with lemons for an invigorating boost, take a cold shower, eat clean whole foods, and get to bed early!
7. Plan ahead with a post-holiday cleanse – If you really want to get ahead of the post-holiday sluggish feeling the best advice I can give is to plan ahead with moderation and a post-holiday cleanse. Treat yourself to the delicious foods but keep it in check with proper portions. Have water between cocktails. Eat the veggie platter and salads before the other foods. This will keep you in check and ahead of the downward spiral. And then have cleanse ready for after the celebrations. I swear by this 3-day plant-based cleanse. It cleanses you in a healthy way for quick results without starvation.
Incorporate even a few of these tips into your routine and I promise you will feel reinvigorated in just a few days!
