Do you know that your surroundings shape your mood?
When you’re in an atmosphere that inspires or uplifts you, it triggers positive energy that sparks inspiration, productivity, creativity, and happiness. We spend so much time in our working environments and homes. Shouldn’t they inspire us?
Designing your space in a way that is aesthetically pleasing is a simple way to boost your frequency, energy, and focus.
7 Ways Your Environment Affects You:
- Environmental factors, such as heat, glare, and noise, that you can’t control are stressors.
- Exposure to bright light, whether natural or artificial, improves depression, agitation, and sleep.
- Design can facilitate social interaction, which studies indicate, reduces stress and leads to fewer colds, lower blood pressure and lower heart rates. One study indicated that the health benefits of socializing are equal to physical exercise.
- Nature reduces stress. Even three to five minutes of contact with nature can significantly reduce anxiety, anger, and fear, whether you experience outside views, interior gardens, or nature-themed art.
- Room color can affect your mood. For example, research indicates that blues, greens, and turquoises encourage tranquility and green increases concentration. The color red can actually agitate some people and cause anxiety.
- Scent can affect stress and your mood because the limbic system, the seat of emotion, is directly connected to the olfactory bulb. Aromatherapy is based on how scent affects us. Pine relaxes us, and the smell of fresh-cut grass can make us more joyful.
- The effects of texture on stress are often discounted. If you’ve ever worn an itchy wool sweater, you realize how physical discomfort can make you irritable.
One of the quickest ways to give yourself a boost in energy, inspiration, mood, and overall productivity is to revamp your surroundings or change your scenery. I encourage you to give the place you spend the most time in a little revamp. Whether it is your office or your home, it can be something as simple as decluttering, rearranging furniture or getting some plants or flowers.
Here are some other ideas on how to ensure your environment encourages a positive mood:
- Paint the room where you work something calming
- Incorporate fabrics that make you feel safe and comfortable, like a blanket to hang over your work chair
- Use scents that help your mood. Light a lavender candle or use an oil diffuser.
- Take control of your space. Set the thermostat to a comfortable temperature, turn off the TV, or change the smell if needed.
- Take adequate breaks and get outside.
- Spend time playing with your pets.
- Switch up your working space once in a while. Go to a coffee shop or the library. You can also simply work in different places throughout your home.
I encourage you to look at the space you do the most work in and plan some ways you can revamp the room so you enjoy being there more. You don’t have to remodel or spend a fortune! Small changes can make a significant difference in your mood, creativity, focus, and inspiration. Decluttering your space is 100% free. Light a relaxing scented candle or bring home some grocery store flowers. The smallest adjustments can make the biggest impact!
