There is a rise in coaches nowadays which is truly amazing! But to get the most out of working with a coach, you really want to partner with a coach you connect with.
Here are a couple of things to consider when looking for a coach.
1. Connection – Can you relate to your coach and do you feel comfortable when you talk to them? This is where a consult call can be so impactful. You want to talk to them before you get started so you can see how they make you feel. First impressions are not everything, but if they make you feel empowered on a consult call then they will undoubtedly be of value to you.
2. Choose someone who has gone before you – There are many coaches out there but not all of them will be best equipped to help you. Look for coaches who have achieved the success or results you want in life. Working with a coach not only helps you reach your full potential, but it also helps you get a jumpstart on learning from them. What lessons, failures, and success have they experienced that can give you an advantage in your own life?
3. Are they Experienced?– You will want to know what their experience is. Not just from a certification or education standpoint but life experience and client work as well. Have they worked with clients facing limitations or reaching for goals similar to you? Have they personally experienced things similar to your own desires or in the areas where you need help? This is where reading client testimonials can be really impactful. If you read the testimonials and think “yesss I want that!”, then it’s time to book a consult call or learn more about what the coach has to offer.
4. Education – How have they gotten to the level that they have? What education do they have? What is their own personal growth plan? Do they keep up with industry knowledge and stay ahead of the curve on best practices? Who did they learn from? Basically, you want to determine what qualifies them. This does not always necessarily have to be schooling, but you want to know what education and learning they’ve been proactive with. This qualifies them as a coach because you want someone who can share knowledge and understanding with you on an ongoing basis. When you work with a coach you get a chance to soak up their knowledge – so what knowledge do you want them to have!?
5. Values – This is a big one, once you narrow down a coach based on their knowledge and what they can give you, it’s so important to make sure your values are aligned or at least similar. If something goes against your values, you will never feel fully connected to it. That goes for your work, your friends, family, community, coach, you name it. This person is going to become very involved in your life, they are about to learn about your big dreams, terrifying fears, and limiting beliefs. Knowing they share similar values as you will help you trust them and fully open up to them. If you do not feel comfortable opening up and being yourself with them you will probably not get much out of your sessions with them.
6. Lifestyle – Having a similar lifestyle can also be very helpful in choosing a coach. This will help when it comes to scheduling your sessions together as well as them helping you overcome your own limitations. For example – One of the biggest excuses people use for not being where they want in life is lack of time. If your coach has a similar lifestyle as you, and if they have achieved the success or results you want in life… they have proven this excuse is in fact an excuse, and so they can relate to your own lifestyle and help you progress beyond it as well.
7. The biggest thing to consider – Intuition is a powerful thing, the factor you really want to take into consideration is How do they make you feel?
- How do you feel after reading or listening to their work – are you empowered, inspired, motivated?
- What does your gut say about this person?
- What about after a consult call?
You want to partner with someone who elevates your energy and empowers you in a way that it brings out the best in you.
I’m a coach and it took me a couple tries to find a coach I wanted to work with long term. I’ve also turned clients down because I didn’t believe I was the best coach for them.
A great coach will genuinely want the best for you, and your intuition will pick up on that if you listen to it after your initial conversations with them.
