Deciding to start a business or follow your heart in life?
AMAZING! I cannot encourage it enough. It has the potential to be one of the greatest decisions in your life!
But be warned, on the other side of that freeing decision comes a rollercoaster of emotions, excitement, fears, doubts, and success.
Good new – IT’S SO WORTH IT!
Today I want to share one of the most impactful lessons I learned when I decided to leave corporate to start my own business a few years ago. …
Unfortunately not everyone will understand why you are taking this leap of faith. But if it makes you feel happy, fulfilled, ALIVE, and helps you grow – do it anyway.
From day one you will want to prepare yourself mentally for long term endurance and the haters and disapproving opinions of people.
Sadly there will be people in your life who will try and talk you out of what you are doing…
There will be people who judge you.
There will be people who think you’ve lost your marbles.
There will be people who lash out.
There will be people that try to pull you down.
This will all hurt like hell and can even make you questions the decisions you are making.
That is why it is so important to be steadfast in your vision and resolve for what you are working towards.
It’s also why it’s so important to prepare yourself for these people.
Here are some of the most impactful ways to be prepare yourself for disapproving people or haters when starting something new:
- People don’t know what they don’t know – This is one of the first things I tell all of my clients. When you are about to pursue something new and exciting you might want to keep it a secret until you are more established or have achieved some success. This is understandable because you are facing insecurities and fears, but this allows people to make assumptions and give you their opinions. As soon as you decide to pursue something new you are excited about, tell the people in your life about it. Put it out there and let them know what you are doing. Be honest about how you are feeling, tell them you’re scared – but it makes you happy, it’s bringing a you a new sense of life, and you’re excited about getting started. TELL THEM WHY YOU ARE DOING IT. When we open your hearts and share your truth in this way, it makes it hard for people to try and talk you out of it.
- Set Personal Boundaries – Know even after opening your heart and letting people know why you are doing what you are doing… there will still be some people who try and talk you out of it. Know this has little to do with you and everything to do with them. People grow at different rates. They might not be at a point where they can understand why taking a leap of faith towards your greater happiness or purpose in life can be so impactful. It could also be that seeing you go for it in life is making them face the realization that they are unhappy and unwilling or unready to do something about it yet. Send them love, be happy for where they are, and set some personal boundaries. Know these are not your people to go to when you need words of encouragement or even to celebrate with. I’m not saying cut them out of your life- but I am saying have a very candid conversation with them – let them know you’re disappointed they cannot be happy for you, tell them you’re going for it anyway, and ask them to keep their future opinions to themselves.
- Surround yourself with people who empower you – This is a big one! You want to balance out any negativity in your life. Actually you want to overpower it. As soon as you decide to go for something new in life, you want to be very intentional about surrounding yourself with people who are also going for it. People who empower and inspire you. This is where a success partner, masterminds, mentors, and coaches come in! Invest in your energy and enlist people who believe in/support your greatest potential in life. If you need someone in your corner we should chat!
- Create a brag board – This might sound silly but it works! For some reason we can get 100 encouraging messages, testimonials, or praises but as soon as we get one negative response… we come spiraling down. We put so much more emphasis on that negative than all the positive. As soon as you start something new keep a record of any encouragement, positive feedback, or testimonials. Save them and read them any time you are facing self doubt or a hater creeps up. Train yourself to focus on the good responses and give more power to the positives coming your way!
- Know if you try to help everyone, you will help no one – This is big. When you are starting something new, whether it be a business or passion in life – you will want to be liked, approved of, and accepted. Initially this might mean trying to please/create messaging that will be accepted by everyone. But it’s impossible to please everyone. Let go of that expectation. Instead know that when you get very specific on the people that matter most, your ideal client, customer, etc… that’s when you can truly help. Gear what you do towards them, focus on their reactions, and challenge yourself to be the best you can for them.
You are onto something great. Unfortunately not everyone will understand, but there will be lots of people beyond excited for and inspired by you! Focus on them!
And know I am so proud of you! Taking risks, following your heart.. That’s what making the most of life is all about!
You got this!
Wishing you all the best!
