Before we dive into this post, I want to clarify that when I say spiritual practice I’m not referring solely to religion. Yes, religion is one spiritual practice, but there are many others if you are not a religious person.
I for one am a very spiritual person, but not a religious person. Realizing that these don’t have to be connected is what finally helped me experience peace in my life.
Regardless of your Religion or lack thereof, there is a way for you to incorporate a spiritual practice in your life.
What is a spiritual practice?
When I say Spiritual practice I’m referring to your connection to yourself and to something larger. I’m talking about practices that make you feel grounded, connected, and at peace in your life.
We all crave connection, and we feel the happiest and most at peace when we feel connected to ourselves and to something larger. When we choose to see or believe everything in our life as part of a greater plan there is a sense of inner peace, comfort, and joy.
Spiritual Practice = Activities that help you feel connected to yourself… that help you strengthen your sense of inner peace and hope for a greater good in the world.
Throughout my battles with cancer, and even when I feared for my life as a young child in an abusive home, the one thing that prevented me from crumbling was hope. Regardless of the pain, fear, or whatever I was going through… deep down there was the belief that it was all for some purpose.
I do not believe our pain is our purpose but I believe with my whole heart that our pain can serve some purpose. That belief gave me hope. It helped me to have faith in the future.
Over the years I discovered ways to strengthen that sense of hope through spiritual practices. I was raised in the Catholic church but those teachings never did it for me. When I shifted from religious scripture towards activities that made me feel connected to something larger I finally understood inner peace.
It’s so powerful for us to connect with whatever power or presence in the universe we feel is larger than us, bigger than us, or out there guiding us through this thing called life. We do this through our own spiritual practice.
Here are some of the ways you can incorporate Spiritual Practice in your life:
1. Daily Meditation
Before you roll your eyes, hear me out! I get it that if you are a go-go-go type of person, the thought of meditation, of slowing down and being alone with your own thoughts can seem absurd. But meditation helps you train your mind better than anything else. This is so powerful for your sense of self, connection to self, drive, and energy. Meditation is one of the most impactful things you can do in life. Test it out with a minute a day in the morning or during transitional moments throughout the day and you will feel calmer and more in control of your life.
2. Weekly Recharge
Do you do something to recharge each week? What activities make you feel grounded? Are there things that if you don’t do them, you feel off and all out of sorts? It’s so important that we do things or go places that recharge, inspire, and ground us. For me, it’s time in nature. If I go a whole week without time outside, I am spiritually thrown off. I feel drained and disconnected. What is something you lose yourself in that helps you recharge and feel connected? Do that thing AT LEAST once a week to keep your spirituality flowing.
It is so important to find that connection. Humans crave a spiritual connection and they need time to experience and nurture that connection on a daily and weekly basis. Commit to answering the questions I posed above, and then commit to a daily and weekly spiritual practice. This will change your life! It will help you experience more peace and happiness in your life.
