You’ll be amazed at what it can do for you!
Meditating… You hear about all the benefits, know it will help you live your best life, test it out occasionally, maybe even incorporate it into your life weekly… but have you ever really given it a true chance?
I’ll be honest, a few years ago I was one of those people who turned their nose up at the idea. As a go- go- go type of person who likes to try and “do it all”, the thought of slowing down to calm the mind and be alone with your thoughts can seem like a huge waste of time.
But then I faced full-on anxiety attacks in my life and something had to give.
I think we all battle anxiety in our lives. Unfortunately, modern-day society breeds it into us. But after my first cancer diagnosis, it got to the point of unbearable and I had to do something to get ahead of it.
In full transparency, initially, I was a fair-weather practitioner. When I was starting to feel like stress or anxiety were getting the best of me I would start up my meditation habit. I would commit to just 5 minutes a day and without fail, the anxiety would calm.
But once the anxiety had seemed to settle, I would stop the daily practice. Sound familiar!? 😉
Being Proactive vs Reactive
Most of us use meditation very reactively. We go back to it when anxiety or stress has gotten the best of us. I know that was the case for me these last 6 years…
It was a habit I would turn to when I needed it to fix my anxiety rather than a tool I used to stay ahead of it.
The breaking point for me came a little over a month ago.
When we get to a point that we are so fed up with something we’ll be more proactive in changing in. I was fed up with my mind running away from me and robbing me of happy times in my life. So I committed to meditating for 5-20 minutes each day for a month.
No exceptions – 30 days of meditating regardless of what my mood was.
What I experienced was beyond transformative and now, I’m a full-on convert that will never go back.
What 30 days of meditating will do for you:
- Your anxiety and stress will have less control over you. Basically, you learn how to get ahead of it and release the negative feelings it triggers in your body.
- In giving you mind a break you naturally recharge without caffeine during the day
- You will sleep better
- You feel more grounded, connected, and self-aware
- You feel more present and grateful in your life
- You trust more in the direction of your life
- You have more clarity on what means the most to you
In short, you feel lighter and happier. This might sound like fufu, but it’s the most straight forward and direct way to explain what the last 30 days have brought about for me.
The goal of meditation:
One of my favorite descriptions of meditation comes from Sam Harris in his book Waking Up – “The goal of meditation is to arrive at a state of well being that is impenetrable or easily returned to if penetrated. It’s all about cultivating happiness in a way that fulfillment lasts.”
Here’s the sneaky thing about anxiety, or about life rather… even when things are great, when you’re on top of your game and have so many amazing things to be grateful for in your life, your mind can still creep up and get the best of you.
While we cannot always control what happens to us in life, we can control our reaction to what comes our way.
Meditating helps you train your mind so can be more in control of your thoughts, fully present, positive, and fulfilled in your life.
Try it out for 30 days, even just a few minutes a day will make a difference I promise!
